China produces far more electric cars than everyone else combined. As little as they care about the environment, they are already freaking out about what to do with him old batteries. They have not come up with a solution. The environmental disaster produced by discarded lithium batteries may eventually be worse than all of the others that mankind has produced combined.
All of the important issues are glossed over, the strip mining, the lithium leach fields, the disposal, the lack of recyclability. Their predictions are based on coming up with a solution in the next few years, nothing they have available right now. They might last ten, if there is no accident, or the cars aren't in a flood.

Lithium batteries in use have a service life of less than five years, at which point the pack must be replaced - and it can't be recycled, and they're difficult to store safely - the fire/smoke danger continues. Frankly, they ought to be banned outright.
